Computer Club Topics Aug 2017 thru April 2018

Next Meeting: Friday 1:30 Aug 4th
Cantina Quilting Lounge
Topic: Recovering Your Email Password

Well it’s that time of year again.  Time for me to kick off a series of (hopefully) meaningful topics that can be of value to all of us here in Arcadia Village.  I get most of my inspiration from working with people here in the park so everything I discuss in the meetings come straight from the real world – US!

Based on the tradition started long before I took the club over from Ross Clark and Jimmy Poe (who ran it for years and years) the club meets the first and third Fridays of the month in the Cantina Quilters Lounge located adjacent to the interior pool room door.  I usually announce the meeting topic a few days in advance via the email list gathered on this website – but I will also be posting new meeting on the AV Facebook group page at the same time.

It is almost never necessary to bring your laptop – but you may want to take note!  While the meetings run from 1:30-2:30 I am usually there at 12:30 to answer questions you might have that aren’t part of the topic.

August 2017 thru April 2018 Meeting Topics

Recovering Your Email Password – the more we use our email account the more valuable it becomes.  Which is why it is very important to be sure you can recover your password in case it’s forgotten.  Of all the work I do here in the park this is by far the #1 topic.

What’s new in the latest version of Windows 10 – There’s have been a lot of changes recently with the new “creators update”.  I’ll discuss all this new stuff and demo a few things.

Advanced Image Editing – I’ll be honest we tried this already and it didn’t go well.  So this time I’m going to limit the class to 4-5 people at a time and I’ll give this class as many times as I need to make sure everyone can attend.

Internet TV – I’ve given this talk many times and each time there is more to discuss.  The number of options you have to augment or even supplant your cable (Prism/Dish/Directv/Comcast/Xfinity) have never been better.  Cindy & I have cut our TV entertainment bill by $1,000 per year.  You can too.

What is Hacking? – Ahh, this is the topic that really gets my juices flowing.  But rather than going into all of the gritty details and technical stuff I’ll explain how the major “hacks” you see on the news really happen and how they can potentially affect you.  You’ll be amazed and maybe a little scared.

Accessing the Online Village Calendar – We live in a vibrant and busy community.  The calendar is always changing learn how you can access it online and attach it to your laptop, smartphone, and tablet.  New miss an event.

New PC/laptop Options – Thinking of getting a new PC/laptop?  Come to this session and learn about some new kinds of PCs your can buy to both save you money and make your life easier and safer.

Should you replace your CenturyLink router? – Where do I begin… Sure your CL router may seem to work just fine but there’s so much more you can do if you get the latest technology.  Are there areas in your house too far away from the router?  If you have frequent visitors that come with their phones and tablets (dare I say grandchildren?) you benefit from this info.

Using Google Home to Make Your Life Easier and Fun – Recently I bit the bullet and bought the $99 Google Home smart microphone and speaker.  It’s similar to the Amazon Alexa you may have seen on TV, but more powerful because it’s now about buying stuff from Amazon.  It’s about hands-free access to the internet.  Think 2001 a Space Odyssey without the HAL 9000.  Come and explore your inner George Jetson!

What smartphone do really I need? – OMG have things changed in the past 2 years since I last did this talk.  If you are thinking about getting a new smartphone or perhaps your first one come to this meeting and learn how not to overspend.

Cellphone Companies Verizon/AT&T/Sprint vs Everyone Else – Come to this session to learn the ins and outs about how all the secondary carriers like Cricket, Boost, US Cellular, etc really work and how they are work different from the major carriers.

You have a smartphone. You may not need CenturyLink internet. – If you have cellphone you may be able to get rid of your expensive CenturyLink internet bill.  Come to the meeting and learn what you can and can’t do by turning your phone into a hotspot.
